Family is key to every part of fashion designer Meggie Kempner’s life. Her business, Kempner NYC, is based in New York, where she thinks up timeless pieces for the modern woman, alongside her partner and brother, Chris. The line is an homage to their iconic grandmother, Nan, a fixture of the city’s culture scene—Meggie thought it up during her years as a stylist at Ralph Lauren, inspired by her hours spent on the floor of her grandmother’s closet while Nan readied herself for society events.
When Meggie’s not in New York, she spends her off time reconnecting with family, as well, often heading to Lyford Cay. Her father’s family, and now Meggie’s generation, frequent the private community on the western tip of New Providence Island, in the Bahamas, as often as they can. Here, she shares her most recent trip (we’re envious of her tan) and her packing list for the bright and gorgeous tropical island spot.
Lyford Cay is special because: I have been going there since I was a child. My father grew up going there with his parents, so it has become quite a tradition in our family. We have so many special memories there!
I try to go . . . At least once a year. If i had it my way, I would go more often. I was lucky enough to be able to spend Easter weekend there, so I just returned.
Lyford Cay style is: Beachy, easy, colorful, but still chic.
Versus my own: I find myself wanting to wear a ton of bright colors while I'm on the island, which is different from my typical style in New York. I'm inspired by all of the gorgeous colors of the landscape. So I guess, I do fit in with the color palette there.
I tend to always overpack. You never know what might come up, right?Meggie Kempner
My favorite spot: The Little Club. The club was decorated by Tom Scheerer and I think he did the most wonderful job. It has a beautiful bar room, too, with a pink-and-white striped tented dining area. It's spectacular.
Favorite item I've brought home: A tan!
When I go, I always pack too many: Dresses. No matter where I am going, I tend to always overpack. You never know what might come up, right?
No matter where I'm traveling, I always bring my: Favorite Kempner pieces.
